Built-up Membrane Construction Roofing
Built-up roofing membranes are comprised of three major components: felts, bitumen, and mineral aggregate. This combination produces a membrane capable of resisting a roofs expansion and contraction. The felt works as a stabilizer holding together the three components. The Bitumen is the adhesive that bonds all components as one. The mineral aggregate serves the purpose of protecting a roof surface from solar radiation, acts as ballast, rain, snow, hail. and protects surface from abrasions caused from foot traffic. In addition, the mineral aggregate gives a roofing system a fire resistant outer shell reducing the spread of damaging fire.
